I truly feel blessed to have grown up in the Lakes Region of New Hampshire. This state is phenomenally beautiful. The White Mountains, numerous lakes, rivers, ocean, beautiful foliage, natural formations and historic New England towns make for consistent and varied beauty.
The quality of life is great as well. Maybe that is why it is so expensive to live here.
NH is experiencing a huge problem with a growing gap between college graduates and retiring baby boomers. The cost to live, with the average salary is not balanced at all. There are no entry level jobs that pay enough for grads to even make rent. There are not opportunities either for these grads.
A former friend and business owner was in business for 6 years when he had to give it up and move to Texas. He continually stated that New Hampshire was great once you have “made it”.
As an owner of a start up web design business, I experience this gap in a huge way. There are limited opportunities for designers and developers in this area. Sure, there are many companies in Boston – maybe that’s where a lot of grads are going.
If you live in NH, or are a grad, what are your thoughts on this gap? Do you think anything will be able to change it? Or do you think that the only way 20 somethings will find success is to move to an area with greater opportunities?
